Position Overview

We are seeking a senior-level Engineering Manager to lead and expand a growing engineering office based in the Charlotte, NC area. This role is responsible for overseeing daily operations, managing a multidisciplinary engineering and design team, and serving as a key client-facing leader to support project delivery and resolve technical challenges.

In addition to operational leadership, this position plays a critical role in supporting business development efforts, promoting engineering services, and cultivating new client relationships within the investor-owned utility, municipal, and electric cooperative markets.

This position reports to a senior business leader and includes direct management responsibility.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead office operations including staff supervision, workload planning, budget oversight, and schedule management
  • Foster strong employee engagement through hiring, mentorship, performance reviews, and career development
  • Provide technical oversight of project scopes, budgets, proposals, and execution
  • Review and develop engineering specifications for bidding, including equipment, labor, and protection & control systems
  • Act as a primary point of contact for key clients, addressing technical and project-related concerns
  • Support and drive business development initiatives, including maintaining existing accounts and pursuing new opportunities
  • Contribute to strategic growth initiatives by supporting the delivery of integrated, multi-discipline engineering solutions
  • Promote and uphold a strong safety culture by adhering to established safety standards and best practices
  • Maintain awareness of industry trends, market conditions, and emerging technologies impacting the utility sector

Operational Leadership

  • Manage and provide technical leadership to Electrical Engineers, Project Managers, Designers, and Technicians
  • Oversee resource utilization, forecast staffing needs, and monitor project backlog
  • Coordinate cross-functional collaboration with teams in other locations and disciplines
  • Conduct quality control reviews for substation protection and control designs, relay settings, and stamped construction packages
  • Resolve internal team challenges and client issues in a professional and effective manner
  • Support construction activities as needed

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required; multi-state licensure capability preferred
  • MBA, PMP, or Master's degree in Engineering Management is a plus
  • 10+ years of experience in substation and protection & control engineering
  • 5+ years in an engineering consulting environment
  • 5+ years of people management experience
  • Strong business development, networking, and client relationship skills
  • Experience evaluating technical challenges and engineering solutions
  • Process-oriented mindset with a focus on continuous improvement
  • Excellent communication and leadership abilities

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency with engineering and design software such as AutoCAD, CYMTCC, SEL software, Omicron Testing Universe, or similar tools
  • Working knowledge of project management software
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and related Office tools
